I'm not sure that going for a 1988 period car stereo is the best plan:
such a machine, if you can find one, is unlikely to be of high quality
compared with a new unit, and would add little to the value or appeal of
the car, IMHO.
I'm not really sure that a CD player is a great choice. The gear shift is
rather close to the stereo, and I find that a stereo which plays MD is
much more practical: There's actually room to change the disks! An MD
player does, of course, mean that you'll want a means of recording MDs to
start with - which will bump up the effective cost * (if you don't
already have an MD deck). MDs are much more robust than CDs, and take up
a fraction of the space.
*: MD decks on eBay in the UK I've noticed are won for around £50.

both my daughters have 944s with CD player decks in them, no problem
with shift lever interference. But now, I'd recommend a deck with an
external audio in so you can connect an IPOD or equivalent to it - no
need to mess wtih CDs.
as receommended, go for a modern unit, get something with a dark face
and no "japanese disease" dancing graphics and it will be fine.
