Circular metal shroud behind brake discs.

Hi,
I had a nasty grinding sound from my front RHS this weekend ('86 944 2.5
Lux) and upon inspection found that a metal shroud that lies inboard of the
brake disc has so corroded as to semi detach and start chafing on the inside
of my teledial alloy. Upon removing the wheel I was able (with minimal
effort) to remove the offending piece of aged ironmongery and proceed on my
way with no further chafe. The questions I have are:

1. what do the shrouds do and should I be concerned enough to buy a new
one/pair? Can I live happily and safely without them?

2. I have a chafed groove in the paint of the inside of my alloy wheel (it
was only when I had the window open I heard the noise and stopped). How can
I repair this (given I'd prefer to wait a while before reconditioning the
entire set together)?

Many thanks in advance for your help,
Chris.

The shrouds are, I believe, to protect the discs from flying stones etc and
also possibly to deflect brake pad dust outwards. You could run the car
without them, I reckon, but then again Porsche must have thought they were
essential or they wouldn't have put them there ! They can be bought from
Euro Car Parts for about half the cost from a Porsche dealer.

Can't help about the alloys though - sorry.

since these rarely fail you ought to be able to get them for a
pittance from a wrecking yard in a locaton where it is dry, such as
the SouthWest USA - and since they are light, shipping to the UK will
be cheap too - I'd just buy new ones - a source I've used is
HoustonEuropean.com.  as for the wheel, just put any kind of paint on
it if you are worried about corrosion, or paint the wheel intereior
black and declare victory
