hi every one i just got a 86 porsche 944 turbo the car is in great
shape in and out. but there is one thing wrong with it. the guy that
sold it too me told me it did have a oil leak in the oil pan gasket. so
i took it to to a place that only works on porsche's (euroworks) in
matthews n.c.. and to replace the oil pan gasket it would be $1.495.00
dollars. he said it would take 14 hours to do. it seems to be alot for
just a oil pan gasket. if someone has had this problem befour please
let me know if there is a easyer way to fix it.           thank all of
you so much

I doubt it is the oil pan gasket.  You need to remove the aluminum
cover, clean it up, put it back on and drive the car a few hundred
miles, take cover off and inspect where the oil is coming from.  I
would guess it is from the main bearing or power steering pump.  Some
oil leakage is OK.

hay great idea but i don't think its in the front because it drips on
the header pipe rigth around where it hooks up to the exhaust pipe. and
i also changed the oil about 3 weeks ago and it smoked a little bit
more but only when warming it up once it warmed up and the header pipe
gets warm it dose not smoke at all. the other day i checked the oil and
it was about a 1qt low and it has not smoked as bad as when i changed
the oil. i wonder if this is because the oil is a little below the
gastket. and the main bearing if it was leaking it would be between the
motor and the bellhouseing rigth. please if you have any more advice
iam all ears. thank you so much.

my 85.5 developed a leak where oil dripped on the pipe just aft of the
header - it was the small round gasket that seals the back of the camshaft
bore - there are 3 small bolts that hold a plate and a cork gasket in
place - these would loosen up periodically - you may wish to check that
before shelling out for an oil pan gasket.

This job is so expensive because the oil pan is not easy to remove.
At one time I needed this as well.  My mechanic quoted me about 900
only
because he had a special rack (used with mercedes) that makes it easier
to drop the front suspension.

The oil pan gasket is a dreaded leak indeed.  It make be adviseable
if you do it to go ahead and have them replace the connecting rods(?)
while
he's down there.

theres no way around it you have to drop the front suspension just to
get to the oil pan

aaah, what's the big deal about dropping the front suspension - I've done
that to change motor mounts - hold car up on jack stands, loosen a couple of
bolts and the cross member is free - $900 for this job seems quite extreme -
you can buy a whole 944 for that price.  Maybe you should look for a
mechanic that actually wants to do the job? or who is familiar with these
cars?  Some stuff is a real pain, and $900 is about what I might expect to
pay for a clutch R&R (labor), but the oil pan isn't as much work as a
clutch - how much per hour are your mechanics charging youanyway?

If you have oil dripping on the exhaust header it is not coming from
the oil pan gasket.
You probably have a leak around the cam shaft or more likely the oil
cooler gasket is shot.
Simple job to replace.  Take about two hours.
