ok, I've changed timing belts many times, to convirm TDC you just look in
the little viewport above the flywheel and align the OT mark with the
pointer. Well, this is a 944S, and I can't see any OT mark, nor can I see
the pointer I expect. I have a 85.5 hard copy manual, it isn't any help. I
have a soft copy manual, the one from the web, and I have a soft copy 16
valve supplement - can't find anything saying how to set the TDC - anyone
care to offer a hint (yeah, I know, remove the head and look at piston #1 -
and several tricks involving a piece of dowell and removing #1 sparkplug
come to mind, but ...)

On a 944S, seeing the TDC mark from the top of the engine is a little
difficult because of all the wiring, oil vent hose, etc. However, the mark
on the bottom side is easy to see, and I'd take a look there. Same deal as
with the earlier cars in terms of location.
