> why do you think ignition and not fuel?
you really got at the root of it - there's no thinking , only hope,
because i have to eliminate possibilities.
i have thought it could be the injectors, fuel rail, and any of those
wires and plugs arrayed around the engine, and i read about wet DME's,
TPS, fuel pump, and so on. oh, i also checked the air filter, its not
bad. i also gave it lots of throttle during starting and it didn't
help <--(suggests fuel problem?). its difficult for me to check for
spark right now, so the coil seemed the easiest/cheapest/fastest thing
to eliminate. i could go on with more trivia, but...
i take it that the coil is... well,... i mean... where's this
"connector" 4 i'm supposed to be able to touch with a multimiter pin?

i should add that when the car could start and hold, and get driving
around, i had no problems that seemed to me to indicate fuel problems,
like stuttering or slow response to pressing the accelerator. the idle
speed is ~ 800 RPM. but i see your point.

so, try an experiment - remove a spark plug, connect the wire to it, have a
friend crank the engine and see if you have a spark - it doesn't prove that
the spark is at the right time, but it will rule out most coil and wire
failures

It's like never the coil - and the DME does not have to be wet to be bad -
try knocking it before starting.
