'86 944T Starter Relay?

My '86 944T refused to start this morning.  When I turned
the key the starter motor did not turn.  I heard no relay
click.  The battery seems OK, as the interior lights all
work, the instrument panel lights up, the radio plays, etc.
They do cut off as I turn to the start position, but I
believe that is normal function for the ignition switch.

I've looked at the electrical diagram and it looks like
there is a wire that runs from the ignition switch directly
to the starter motor.  It appears that the starter relay is
integrated into the  starter motor.  Is that correct?  Is it
replaceable?  I don't see any kind of interlock that might
be broken. Is there a clutch interlock I might be missing
that could be broken?  (You'd think after all these years of
driving it I would know if there was an interlock, but I'm
not in the habit of starting it without pressing the clutch
down.)

I suppose the first thing to do is to see if power is going
down to the starter relay on the wire from the ignition
switch, but if anyone has any suggestions or comments, I'm
all ears.  Thanks in advance.

The starter is pulling current from the battery as per your lights etc.
The battery is either too weak or a bad connection on battery or the
starter needs new brushes or rebuild.
Check battery voltage to be at least 12.5 ideally 13.5.  ( turn off all
accessories when starting an engine)

I had a similar prob recently - except starter was very sluggish (battery
was fine). The cause? Bad earth strap.

I'll check it, but I don't think the starter is pulling any
current.   I *think* the ignition switch disconnects the
radio etc. so they are not damaged due to voltage transients
during starting.

The starter could need a rebuild.

I'll check the battery voltage this weekend both prior to
start and when I turn ignition to START.
