The LCD clock display in the dash of my '86 944T is bad.  I
can only see the upper right corner of the clock - other
than that it probably works, but it's unreadable.  Anyone
have any suggestions?  I'm willing to replace it with
something from Radio Shack, but I want it to look nice and I
want the buttons below it to control the clock.  Is there a
reasonable cost replacement?  Can the display be replaced
and leave the electronics?

Do not give up on your clock yet.

Mine was very dim in daylight  and unviewable at night.

Then I discovered that it was supposed to be lit up.

This has made all the difference, it is clearly visible in daylight and
nicely dimmed at night but is only lit up when the ignition is on.

The Clarkes garage site provides instructions how to get to it and the
cigarette lighter lamp. The cigarette lighter lamp came from my local parts
shop but the clock lamp had to come from the Porsche dealer (£2.5 ) as it
was slightly different, but it came with a new holder

the clock displays sometimes fail - the seal at the edge goes bad allowing
air to enter and destroy the LCD - the only solution I know of is to replace
hte LCD or replace the whole clock - it is possible to replace the crystals
and reseal the clock, but that takes technology most of us don't have lying
around at home

That is what has happened to mine.  It's mostly a cosmetic
issue, but I was hoping someone had found a compatible LCD
display, or a compatible clock that was controlled by three
buttons.

I would recommend you just find a clock on a wrecked car (and keep your old
one for parts) - try places like Houston European (I've had great luck
buying from them) - the proper clock should cost you $5 to $25, though I've
seen them go for $50..  The LCD itself is probably a standard LCD used in
many clocks, so if you found a german clock of about the right vintage it
may well have that display - or look at the display and see if it has a
manufacture's mark - the display is not hard to change if you have a spare -
you just open the clock up and swap it

Thanks for the comments.  That's what I'll do.

Thanks, but it's truly busted. Half of the display is not
visible - the other half is OK.  It looks like there is air
underneath the outer layer of glass.  When you press on it,
you get sort of banding phenomenon.  It' shard to describe,
but I've seen it before on other LCD panels.  It's not just
a bad light.

I haven't tried to get to it since the LCD display part is
bad and I wouldn't have anything to put in there.  That's
why I'm looking for a substitute of some type.
