My 1983 944 isn't getting as much use as it once did.  This summer, I
would take it out for a spin around the neighborhood and it was
running very well.  However, if I stopped and let the car sit in the
hot sun for a period of time, it would not restart until the sun had
gone down and the car had cooled off.  Any ideas?

I had this effect from a dme relay with a bad internal connection.  I've
also seen this when the starter is worn and the brushes won't make contact -
you don't say if it cranks and doesn't fire, or doesn't crank

It cranks, but won't start until it has cooled off.  Literally, until
the sun has gone down and the ambient temperature has dropped.

so, have you done any diagnosis?  if yes, please report, if no, do the
following when it doesn't start:

1. pull a spark plug wire - is there spark or not?
2. remove the cap and ball (don't loose ball) on fuel rail - is there fuel
pressure or not?
3. spray ether into intake - does it cough and run for a few moments or not?

report results, then we can offer better suggestions.
