There is a row of switches below the radio but in front of the gearshift on
my 1987 944.

Should these be illuminated at night?

Apart from the central locking switch's red light they aren't illuminated
which is a bit irritating but you eventually get used to it ;-)

I've wired up a couple of LEDs (taking feed from the ashtray lamp) & put
them in the cubby hole below the radio so they cast a dim glow over those
switches. It's not ideal but it helps avoid opening the sunroof in the rain
when I want to use the rear wiper. Difficult to position them to illuminate
the switch area without being directly in my line of sight though.

Thanks for that very useful information I will not waste my time trying to fix them.

However I now discover that I have an ashtray light so I will have to fix that!

New bulb fitted and all now OK.

I am surprised that the row of switches in front of the gear shift is not illuminated as all the other switches on the dash are.

Thanks for that very useful information I will not waste my time trying to fix them.

However I now discover that I have an ashtray light so I will have to fix that!
