On my 1987 944 the fuel gauge works OK on start up in the morning but then
returns to zero after about 3 miles.

On cold days it works for a bit longer.

For the rest of the day it may or may not operate for a period after
starting the engine.

It could possibly be something to do with the engine warming up.

I am aware that there must be a sensor etc. which ensures fast tickover when
cold and them reduces the tickover to normal when warm. and also there is
the radiator fan which also is temperature related.

But is there anything else?

Any ideas about what can turn off the fuel gauge?

The float is sticking on the wire guides.  You need to replace the
sending unit.  I am on my third one now on an 84 944.  Buy one here

it is also possible that it's a grounding problem or a bad connecton
(intermittant) to the gauge cluster -

If you do think you need a new sending unit, I have a used one I'll
sell for $20.  It's been in my basement for several years, and I'm a
little sick of tripping over it!

If you need my email, let me know via a post and I'll give it to you.

Alec.

Just a guess, but I would look for a bad ground connetion which is affectd
by something waming up.
