Hi Gearheads,
When I start my car on a cold morning (of which we are having
many these days even in sunny california) I hear a regular clatter,
from the engine bay, like a plastic fan hitting something. This goes
off when the car is warm enough, after about 5 mins. What could be the
problem? How do I track down this issue?
This is a '86 944 NA, with about 100k miles on it. I got it about 10k
miles back. This is a fairly recent issue.

well, the obvious first step is to open the hood, put the car in neutral
with the parking brake on, and start it, then listen and look - is the
chatter from the front, rear, side, or what? is there something near where
the chatter is coming from that could be doing it?  and so on.  On e
possibel culprit is valve lifters, but they dont' sound like a plastic fan
to me.  another possibility is the fans themselves - but you need to look,
or pay someone to look for you -
