Have option to buy a 1985 944 in very good condition for about $4000. One
set of mechanics (both work on the cars) tell me it's too early a model ,
unreliable and to stay away; the others say it's the same car as my 1987
924s ; same engine, electronics , and would prove just as reliable.

A lot of the 924S interior parts were backdated to early 944 spec.
you'd have to ask someone else about the mechanical stuff. Not sure how
significant the differences in the model years are.

In 1985.5, the interior was updated to the modern look. Through some
tuning, the engine makes a few more horse power, too.
In 1987, the wheel offset was updated and the spring loaded timing
belt tensioner was put on. There are probably a few other minor
differences, but for the most part, all 944s are almost mechanicall
identical.
In fact, the 924S, other than the sheet metal and the turn signals, is
almost the same car.
If those mechanics were comparing the original 924 with the 924S, then
they would be 100% correct... but that's another story.
Good luck!

I had both the early and late 944...my early model was every bit as good as
my late model. The early models are definitely more simplified...cheaper
parts, etc...

If many of the parts are interchangable, as alluded to here, I have a 1982
924 Turbo parts car that may provide you with some spare parts. The interior
and most plastic/rubber parts are shot from several years of baking in the
Arizona sun, but mechanical parts, suspension, engine, transaxle, sheet
metal, etc are all in fairly good shape. If there are any particular parts
you need to get the '85 944 online, send me an email and we can discuss this
further. I have lots of photos documenting the status of the parts. Note
that you need to modify my email address as directed to respond directly to
me.
Good luck with your project either way.
