I have an 85.5 944 and when accelerating off the line (somewhat agressive)
there is a clicking in first and second gear.

most likely, the clutch is getting close to failing - if you have the kind
with the rubber do-nut instead of springs (which they used on 85.5), the
rubber softens and goes bad, and the pawl that keeps it from just spinning
then starts activating, so you are hearing a metal to metal click - what
usually follows is either death of the transmission from shock transmitted
down the driveshaft (this happened to me), or the rubber failing followed by
the pawl failing (this happened to both daughter's 944s).  If the clicks
come from the rear of the car, then it's something else, perhaps.

I can confirm this - had same symptoms prior to clutch failure: Just
assumed the engine was knocking.
