Front strut replacement - '88 944 NA

Hi all,

I've been told that the front shocks on my 944 are "shot" - it is a
little bouncy.  PO replaced fronts with Gabriels just before purchase
back in early '04.  They appear to be complete strut units, HOWEVER the
only replacements that appear to be available are either Boge or KYB and
I haven't been impressed with the longevity of either brand (nor the
Gabriels that lasted only 3 years.)  I would like, if possible, to use
Bilsteins as I already have Bilstein HD's on the rear.  Bilstein does
not list a front unit for my car but they do list an insert for the
earlier, replaceable-cartridge type struts.  My question is this; could
I find a used pair of 85.5-86 struts, and just put the Bilstein
cartridges in them and swap my springs, etc. onto them and end up with a
good setup, or is there a physical difference between those and the
87-88 struts that would make this not work?

thanks much,

nate

if you got a set of the earlier struts, you could swap and put the inserts
in them.  Or, if you wish, I have a new set (about 500 miles on them) from a
car that was in an accident - the lower braket on one side is bent (but
could be straightened) - if you would like these, drop me an email and
perhaps we can work out something
to get my email, visit my web site, www.wbnoble.com  browse around, until
you find it, and send me a note.

I'll be sending you a msg. when I get home later tonight re: the
struts you have... I may be interested

I talked to a guy a Paragon earlier today, he said that the part that
bolts to the spindle is completely different on 85.5-86 and 87-88 so
my idea wouldn't work, does this sound right?

thanks,

nate

I don't think so, but I don't have an earlier spindle handy to check - I had
an 85.5 but I gave the car to my brother so it isn't handy - my recollection
though is that they are the same, only the later cars didn't have
replaceable cartriges.  The struts I have are from an 87 S

Well I found a pair of blown struts on fleabay for $10 that are
supposedly off an '86; I'll be able to compare now and will be back in
touch once I come to some conclusions.
