I have a 1986   944 Turbo. The tail pipe rusted off right at the muffler
exactly where the hanger is.  The Midas muffler shop says they want $1040.00
to replace the entire system.  They say it is one piece. $850.00 for the
parts and the rest labor and gaskets or whatever. I see cat back parts for
$265.00 up to $425.00.  What are some of your opinions on this. Ideas or
options

Thanks

Buy a used system somehow - they practically last forever.
Where are you located?

That sounds crazy! I bought a full bursch system - header and cat back
for less than 700 and installed it myself (race car conversion)- I
have the old system and it still works great - it is from an NA though
- not sure if it is the same size as the turbo - if it is let me know
I will sell it for cheep + Shipping to get it out of the way.

That's the "Porsche" tax... the shops see the crest, and they get
dollar signs in their eyes.

Go to a more reasonable shop.  There is nothing magic about the
exhaust.

There may be a shop that will let you buy & bring in your own parts
and just charge labor.

The original equipment part (from Porsche) is significantly better made than
most of the aftermarket stuff, and will last a lot longer.  The cheap parts
you've found will corrode a lot more quickly, and you'll end up replacing
them in a few years.  You will need to replace the gasket between the
cat-back exhaust and the cat, and you might want to consider replacing the
rubber hangars and one or more of the metal supports for them -- the rubber
parts are probably brittle, and the metal hangars are probably pretty
corroded too.

Get on Pelican and see if anyone is parting out a car or converting a
stock car to a track car.  The factory stuff seems to last a good long
time.  If it were anywhere forward of the muffler I would say just have
the muffler shop weld in a new piece of pipe, but that close to the tip
it would probably show.

good luck

in fact, I have a 944 that I'm parting out, a 16 valve 87 - engine, trans,
etc are good, radiator and AC stuff is good, right side fenders, door are
good, and have seats, carpets, rear lights still too.   And of course the
exhaust system including CAT, so if you need this kind of stuff, find my
email from my web site, www.wbnoble.com and drop me a note - I'm slowly
disposing of the parts on E-bay - I'm pulling the wiring harness (anyone
need connectors or whole harnesses? too - rear glass is good as is
hatchback, spare, etc
