CAR WAS RUNNING FINE UNTIL ONE DAY IT JUST DIED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.
WOULD NOT START FOR SOME TIME. FINALLY IT JUST STARTED. GOT HOME AND WOULD
NOT START SINCE. FIRST I HAD SPARK AND NO GAS. I HAVE REPLACED THE FUEL
PUMP RELAY, PLUGS, WIRES, ROTOR, DIST CAP, AND THE COIL. NOW I HAVE NO SPARK
FROM THE COIL, BUT AM GETTING GAS. I PUT A TEST LIGHT TO THE TERMINALS ON
THE COIL, AND BOTH SIDES HAVE POWER GOING TO IT, BUT THERE IS NO SPARK!! I
HAVE SPENT SO MUCH MONEY ON THIS CAR ALREADY BUT DO NOT KNOW ENOUGH ABOUT IT
TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN. CAN ANYONE HELP ME??

How do you know you are getting gas? How long has the car been
sitting? I went throught this with my N/A - I thought I was getting
gas - tested the pump - new relay - took the end off the fuel rail and
gas came out - I shot ether into the air box and car fired - turns
out I had to have the injectors cleaned and referbished. Have you
checked the obvious things like firing order of the plug wires - this
one tripped me up as well? Also - make sure the distributor cap is in
tight - they can be kind of a bitch to get locked down.

it has been sitting there for about a month now. yeah i took the pump off,
works fine.. checked the fuel rail gas comes out. i even shot some ether in
there and still nothing. im just not getting any spark from the coil. its
new and should work, but for some reason im not getting any spark from there
to the dist, or any wires. i' ve pulled the wires and grounded one but no
spark. i take the wire from the coil off and same thing. i even put a test
light in the end of the wire and the coil, but no power comes out. maybe im
missing something else here. this car is driving me crazy, and really want
to drive it.

I'd strongly suggest you follow the troubleshooting chart for this exact
symptom in your porsche service manual. Obvious causes would be a failed or
intermittant reference or mark sensor, bad DME, and bad wires. Did you
check the low side of the coil with a scope and see that it was getting
pulses as the car cranked? Did you verify that the DME is getting power?
have you checked continuity on reference and mark sensors? I don't remember
if turbo uses hall effect device to trigger spark, if yes, check that and
the ignition control unit. Do you get a spark if you disconnect hot and low
sides from coil, jumper from battery to plus and then touch the - side to
ground?

The answer is - your computer brain has cold soldered joints...good test is
to tap the case lightly ( under the passenger footwall feet rest) )and try
to start. You can open the brain and resolder the larger heavy connections
yourself --- I had so much trouble with my 87-944 initially - until I did
this about 2 years ago - and now the car runs like a dream.
Let us know if this solves your problem.

you may be right, MC, or not - beware of assuming it's always the same
thing - the last test I suggested would help point to DME or not (oh,
DME="computer" in Porschespeak). all other causes are ones that have caused
similar problems.

I had the same problem, replaced dme, coil etc. Check behind the intake
manifold for a set of wires that should be in a holder, mine were melted and
shorting out. Fixed the wires and never had a problem since.

Also recommend you check the output from the reference and speed
sensors and you need to check the fuel pressure with a gauge. Go here
