1987 924s ;  window will not go down or up; a friend fixed this on the other
side some years ago; took  a pencil
eraser and cleaned a contact - but I missed the details of what he did and

causes for this are: switch contacts in the window switch, fuse, motor,
linkage, wires in door.  you could be a bit more forthcoming with diagnostic
details if you want more help.  your friend probably cleaned switch
contacts - will the switch on teh other side of hte car work?

The switch has to be removed.  Use a small screwdriver and pry between
the toggle and the bezel in  the door.  Careful not to separate the
toggle before its out.  Clean the contact surfaces with a diamond file
or sand paper until they are bright metal.  This is a common problem
on 944 924.  I do it about once every two years.
Go here to see what the switch looks like before repairing:

You say window will not go up or down is that both or just one?

If its one window then it sounds like the window switch contact has
worn out.
I had the same problem; I took the door switch panel off and then
took the offending switch out.
My advice is to first of all swap switches over does the window now
work?
If it does then buy a new switch or get a known working one from a
scrap car, far easier than wasting an hour or two buggering about
trying to get it to work.
I know I have been there!
