I have an 86 944 with 124k. Runs nice and smooth but idles maybe a tad
rough at times, but not too bad. I was driving a friends 84 944 the other
day and noticed that his car had a lot more power in the lower rev range,
below 4000. If you rolled on the throttle around 2-3,000 rpm it really
pulled strong, where mine has almost no pull at the same speed. It starts
to pull harder as it should around 4000rpm but loses its urge completely
around 5500 and doesn't really want to pull up to the redline.
I know the previous owner installed new plugs in 2002 before i bought it (at
95k) but I think the plug wires/rotor/distributor might be original. The
wires look to be cracked and brittle. I just replaced the air and fuel
filters. Is my performance likely lacking due to old ignition equipment, or
could I also be looking at dirty injectors among other things? I'm
especially interested in why my engine doesn't pull strong at lower revs
compared to other 944s?
Thanks!

I would have thought that you will need new plugs by now.

1. ignition wires, cap, rotor need to be changed about once per decade - you
are due, change them. Use the OEM ones.
2. injector cleaner won't hurt, try it
3. plugs probably need to be changed - the manual has a recommended
interval - follow it
4. the AFM could be bad, but that usually shows up as a dead spot
5. check for vacuum leaks, your car is very sensitive to vac leaks (and to
clogged air filter)

Also lift the bonnet (hood?) in the dark and see if you can see any flashes
from the ignition wiring.

You may have low fuel pressure along with poor spark.

I thought of that but the car has a new fuel pump.
I know people who have had their injectors taken off and professionally
cleaned and are amazed and the difference....would that be worth a shot or
throwing money away? I've run chevron many times with no difference.

what is your level of mechanical competence? I'm not being rude here - a
new fuel pump has little to do with proper fuel pressure - that is
controlled by the fuel pressure regulator (and secondarily by the damper),
which in turn are controlled by engine vacuum. You find out if you have the
proper pressure by using a gauge to measure it, not by replacing something
and declaring it fixed.
you can clean injectors yourself, I've done it - just use carb cleaner - but
if you aren't much of a mechanic, you are likely to cause more trouble than
you fix.
Instead of shotgunning a problem, some care spent in dianostics will not
only save you $$, but will get the problem fixed (usually) --- of course
some problems are really really hard, but your's doesn't sound like such a
problem

My previous post seemed to have vanished into the ether, so apologies
if this is a double. Seems that others have already addressed your
low end power issues.

For any non-16 valve and non-turbo 944, lack of breath at around 5,500
rpm is "normal." That's why Porsche produced 16-valve and turbo 944s
- to improve breathing and get useful power in the rpm range.
William Noble - 20 Jul 2007 05:17 GMT
speaking of 16 valve engines - anyone want one? I have one for sale, I'm
about to part it out
