1983 944 Fan Not Working / Overheating

My '83 944 was running very hot today.  Even though the weather was
warm, it is unusual for her to get this hot.  When I got home and
popped the hood I noticed that neither of the fans were running.  The
a/c unit needs a charge so I'm not sure if the one fan will ever come
on.

In any event, are the fan relays known to go bad?  Is there some
simple check I can do to test the relay?  Can / Should  I jump a few
contacts to verify that the fan works?  Any other thoughts?

Cheers!

Most likely the thermo switch.  Go here and read about it:

Thanks!  I didn't think it would be something as simple and quick as
swapping in a new relay...   Never is....  =(

Its going to be a while before I can get to this problem.  Can I rig
something up with the relay to turn the fan on manually?

Turn the air conditioning on.  If the fans are good they will run all
the time with AC on.

Will the AC switch turn the fans on even if the compressor is not
working?  The system has been low (or empty) of R12 for many years...

Thx

yes, and you don't need the engine running either, just ignition on

Great!  Thanks for the info!  At least I have an easy way to test the
fan....

Cheers!

so far in the last couple of months I've found two fans with seized front
bearings, both cases the LH fan.  suggest oiling the bearings once every 20
years or so - the fans are $$$$$

Gotcha...

I can still spin my fans by hand.  Is it safe to assume that this
means the bearings are still good?

Thx again for the advice!  I picked up a new thermo s/w and relay and
hope to have them in soon...

fans should spin "easily" by hand, if one is much stiffer than the other,
it's a bad sign
I'd still encourage you to oil the bearings as a preventative measure

test fans by applying power directly to them
