well, my "proof of concept" worked - replaced the lamp in my daughter's 86
NA clock with a high brightness LED and a 470 ohm series resistor - it all
fit into the original bulb base - I ground the 'lens" off the front of the
LED and angled it towards the plastic light guide (the outer edge of the
clock if you haven't taken one of these clocks apart), and it works great -
and now I'll never have to change that )(&_)(* bulb again.

So, if anyone want's to copy, I've told you everything  you need to know
above - but, a question to the group - do you think there is a market for a
LED replacement bulb, for say $10?  I could make them at that price for
resale....

Thanks for the posting and info.

I wouldn't expect to see more than a half dozen to a dozen sales a
year, personally, and only if you continually pushed/advertised.

This is one of those, "if/when I'm in there, I may as well do it
right" type of purchases, rather than a , "cool, I must get one and
install it right away" type of things.

Myself, I'd be interested - but only when the current clock bulb burns
out.  I haven't looked in a while but I believe the incandescent bulb
and holder is in the $3-$7 range?  So, I would likely pay a little
extra and not have to worry about it for a long while.

A big help would be instructions with pictures, for those of us who
are a bit slow.

ya know, I thought about taking photos as I was getting ready to do the job,
then I got the parts out and did it and forgot - now I'd have to take the
bulb out of the car, so as they say, "no way"

but if you want to DIY - you need the parts I identified, or to make it
easier, get a 12 v "resistor LED" - you can find them on the web - just
remove bulb, carefully disassemble holder and solder parts, bend LED to
about 45 deg angle, file lens (oh, and make sure it's pointing the right
way, it will only light in one orientation once installed)

if you want me to make you one, here's a deal - order a batch of a dozen or
so 12V resistor LEDs - I could give you a link - and send me a dead bulb,
I'll make up one and send it back and keep the remaining LEDs as my
outrageous profit -

Y'know, i might just take you up on that - _after_ my bulb next burns
out :-)

Or next time I happen to be pulling the dash anyway (I know I can get
the bulb out through the glove box, but I'm to lazy to do it if I
don't absolutely need to)

If you had this up about a year ago, I may have done it... my clock
worked but had no light.  Replacing it with and LED was on my "to do"
list.  Then one day, for no apparent reason, it lit up!  and has been
working fine since.
