Always had a soft spot for these 944's and have been looking for a
deal on one in need of a "little" TLC for a couple of years now, well
I finally found one.

Just picked up a '84 944 that has a bad heater core. Have not had a
chance to look for it yet but I'm guessing its accessible from under
the dash?

Any tips on this are much appreciated.

Any other tips on where to get good parts (aftermarket or oem) ?

first tip - I have the whole HVAC section from an 87 sitting here - good
core - don't know if it's the same - you can check part numbers in PET6 or
if you are interested, I can check for you.  it will be a real pain to
change, but the earlier cars may be a bit easier - there is probably a
section in the Porsche service manual detailing the procedure - be sure to
bleed the system when you are through.

I will consider that, thanks.

I don't have the service manual yet, is the haynes manual worth
anything? or do I need the OEM $$$$$ ? I found the OEM at Pelican but
it will cost half the price I paid for this car, not ready for that
expense as of yet.

1. I found the service manual on line - don't know if the scan is still
there or not - you may wish to search - I also have a hard copy that I
insisted the dealer provide with my car when I bought it (new) - you will
want the real Porsche manual

2. Clark's Garage web site is very helpful, has excellent FAQs for many
common repairs

3. be sure to change brake fluid immediately to prevent further corrosion -
and use a pressure bleeder when bleeding the clutch slave or you will have
problems.

4. change timing belt unless you are positive of its age.  good idea to
change timing roller also.  I tension them by feel, never had a problem, but
there is a special $500 tool to help you do it right.

5. are you sure it's the core? there are some O rings near the core that
could be the problem.  Also, you can bypass heater for now, though if you
are in the great snowbelt, that may make driving less comfortable

6. Rennlist and Renntech is another good source for stuff and advice

oh, and one more thing - you can get the parts manual as a download from the
Porsche web site

Thank you much, I will be doing lots of research as this looks to be
very labor intensive.
I have strongly considered bypassing the coolant lines so it can be
driven but yes I do live in the "snow belt" and would love to have
heat this time of year.
I will post back what I come up with, Thanks again.
