I got a '83 944 that I'm replacing the head gasket on.  I got as far as
getting the TDC set on the OT marks through the little window by the
firewall (on the flywheel) but the camshaft marks don't line up.  It's about
1/4" off.  Does that mean that my timing is off and once I put it back
together do I just adj the camshaft marks and keep the flywheel (OT mark)
where it is?

thanks,

yes - before !!!! you reassemble, set the timing mark on the cam to the TDC
location - and double check the flywheel mark (note, there is another mark
underneath that is sometimes easier to see through a slot in the bottom of
the bell housing) - a flywheel lock is a good idea, but for your needs you
could just leave the car in gear with the parking brake set to keep engine
from rotating inadvertently.

That's what I thought, just wanted to make sure.

Thanks for the tip about the lock out tool.  I do have one but I like the
idea about leaving the car in gear too.
