Anyone do this with the "easy conversion kit" that I see in the local
part's stores?
They make it sound easy but what's your real life experience's with
these.

done it on 4 cars, no problems - add adapters to fittings, add proper oil,
fill.

But - it is quite common for seal on compressor to go bad with time -
suggest changing front seal on compressor first - contact polarbear for the
seal and tools to replace, or just send compressor to them for resealing.

Thanks for the info. Polar Bear is in FLA and I'm in Idaho so I will
try the kit first and see if it leaks (only $35) Cheap enough to try
and possibly have to do twice.

if you use the kit, be very careful installing the new seal - I used the
kit, messed up the seal and decided to just send the pump to them to
reseal - I don't remember the charge but it was about 2X the seal alone - I
shipped in a flat rate box, so it cost about $10 to get it to them

and they were very helpful - I recommend them.

I used http://www.freeze12.com/ cools better than r134a and no
convertion needed be sure to use the temp chart they have. It also
does not take as much freeze 12 as r12

At a minimum, the entire system should be flushed of old oil, and the
receiver/dryer should be replaced.  Otherwise you run the risk of serious
contamination problems which could eventually lead to more expensive
problems.

Stay with R12 if at all possible.  And yes, it is still available.
Even in the PRK (Peoples Republik of Kalifornia.)

while you can get R-12, it is more expensive, and it's ozone depeleting -
unless you are in a really really hot location, the R-134 converted cars
cool just fine - I'm ok up to an outside temperature of about 110 to 115 F.
You do NOT need to change the oil, but you need to use a compatible oil, and
you do NOT need to change the receiver dryer unless the system has been open
for a long time - I've changed 4 cars over, the first one about 6 years ago,
no problems with other stuff going bad.  The only problems I had were worn
out shaft seals, and a couple of bad hoses - particularly on the 85.5, the
HP hose to the condenser is prone to rupture to to the specific design - 87
is different, doesn't have the problem - 86 is, if memory serves, the same
as 85.5.
