Fuel pressure problem?

I have a '83 944.  I seem to be having a fuel pressure problem, I think?  It
starts ok but doesn't ideal very good.  When I hold done the accelerator it
keeps running for about 30 seconds and then the fuel pressure goes up about
10lbs and then dies.  The pressure starts out right (30lbs) but as the car
is dieing it goes up to around 40lbs.  When I let it sit and watch the
pressure gauge it even goes a little higher with out the car running. I can
restart it with out any problems but the same thing happens again.  It seems
to run better once it's warmed up but will still die after about 10min????

I have newer fuel filter, about 500 miles on it, new pressure regulator,
checked for vacuum leaks, switched DME and tried a new DME/fuel
relay....don't know where else to look.

thanks for any help.

fuel pressure is regulated by engine vacuum - as your car is dying the
vacuum drops, causing the regulator to raise the pressure - that's normal

Either the fuel pressure regulator is not working correctly or the
vacuum
is not reaching the regulator correctly.  Try checking the vacuum to
see that it does not  change radically.

Looks like I'm in for some more fun.  I found my vacuum leak.  I had to
remove the intake manifold to see it.  As I was pumping air into the system
to find my leak I found that the end cap (I think) of the balance shaft is
leaking.  I can push it in and pull it partly out.  As I pump in air it pops
out about 1/4" and leaks air.  So I guess I need to rebuild the balance
shaft.

Anyone know where I can buy a complete sealing kit or do I need to order
each seal and o-ring separately?

thanks.....

this does not sound right - - if you get too  much pressure it will
pressurize the crank case - the covers on the back of the balance shafts can
move - but all they will do is make an oil leak -  you could have a bad air
flow meter, or a bad connection to the AFM - there is an excellent article
on the web showing how to test the AFM - your car is different from the
newer ones - my guess is that you either have no signal from the AFM or a
fairly significant air leak, probably in the J tube.

I'm finding out that there are 2 balance shaft.  The one I'm taking about is
the "upper".  It leaking air alright.  I can see the end cap (pointing to
the rear of the engine) pop out every time I apply are to the vacuum line
and when I put my hand there I can feel the air escape.

No I don't see any oil or water leaks , should I?  I would have guessed to
see oil leaking out too but no oil leak anywhere.  That is about the only
thing I don't have problems with on this car.

I did find some minor air leaks but nothing like this one.  I'm tempted to
duct tape it tight just to see if it helps before I pull it all apart.

I have taken the belt off the balance shafts of both 944's I have.
They just rob the engine of power.

they may cause some small loss of power, but they also significantly reduce
vibration - personally I prefer the lower vibration, but if you are racing,
power is everything.  But I'm not racing.
