Porsche Front Speaker Depth

Hi,

I have read a few different sources that all claim the speaker depth
on the front door panels to be different.  I have read anywhere from
1.5" to 2.5".  I am looking to replace these speakers, but want to use
the factory speaker grills.  I have a 1986 944 N/A, and it has the
"waffle-style" front grills.  Does anyone know what will fit?  Will a
mounting depth of 1 and 15/16" fit with the factory grills

The person who owned it before me installed 5 1/4's in the back.  I
replaced these last night with infinity kappas.  They sound nice.  I
am not looking for a PERFECT system; however, the passenger door
speaker sounds worse than any other blown speaker I have heard.  I am
just looking for "good enough".

I appreciate your help.

Why do I have a strange feeling the William Noble will be one of the
first three people to respond to this?

kenwood makes a nice speaker that will fit , or at least they used to - it
needs to be quite shallow though because the window channel runs right
behind the speaker.  Why don't you measure your old speaker - it can't be
much deeper.  I have some speakers from a 944 somewhere if you want them,
but getting the best speaker that fits (and get one with a separate tweeter)
will really make a difference.  The other thing that helps a lot is to put
6X9 speakers in the back - you can do this without cutting anything if you
lift up the panels to install (may require removing the windows, depending
on how lucky you are) - the smaller speakers can't move enough air to make
music sound anything but a bit tinny.

See my 944 Stereo FAQ at:

  http://reality.sgiweb.org/wws/stereo_faq.html#_cch2_945396522

If you go more than 1-5/8" you will need a spacer of some sort.

My Audax 4x6 mid-woofers are 52mm deep, and they are marginally too
deep.  I make them work, but another mm or two of clearance would make
all the difference.  It is that tight.  So keep it under 2"

W.

P.S., I have not done much with the FAQ lately.  But constructive
suggestions are always welcome.
