I finally got my '83 944 running again.  It's been a long road and I like to
thanks everyone for helping me out.

As some of you may recall my last problem I had was a vacuum like symptom.
It turned out to be a bad AFM (air flow meter).  I removed it of the car a
few weeks ago and tested it on the bench and all looked good.  I even
installed the jumper cable to the wiper arm.

The symptoms were as flowed:

1- 70% of the time it would start but dies immediately.

2- 20% of the time it starts and runs for about 15-20 seconds.

3- 10% of the time I was able to drive it for about 10-15 minutes without
showing any problems then it would just die, did not mater if at ideal, low
speed or high speed.  Sometimes it would keep running but had no power juts
like if I took my foot of the throttle but I had it floored.  Other times it
would lung as I was holding the throttle steady.

So anyway, I replaced the AFM and all is fine.

good work - recommend that you open the old one up and look at it - I think
you will see a track worn through the resistance element.  by some careful
bending you can make the contact touch the element somewhere else and then
put the plastic cover back in place - you will then have a spare.

note - be careful removing cover - if you are in a rush you can break it

thanks for the advice but I already did this.  Like I said it looks and
measures good but something in it is bad or I'm missing something.  Maybe
it's just really out of adj.

I haven't opened up the new one yet and I don't think I will unless I start
having problems with it.  Just happy I can final drive the car again.

spending the time to study it carefully is one way to learn a lot - clearly
something is wrong with it - it could be a cracked ceramic substrate, it
could be wear, it could be the connections from the substrate to the
connector, it could be that yours doesn't have the mod to add a wire in
parallel with the contact points that were originally supposed to bring the
signal from the wiper to the connector - but it's worth understanding in
great detail what happened - that's how we all get smarter
