My '86 944T is unhappy when the headlight stalk is pushed forward to
switch on the headlight high beams.   I get no light in that position.
It works fine on low beams.  The interesting thing is that when I pull
the stalk towards me (against the spring) into the temporary position
that will "flash the guy ahead of me", it lights the high beams.  Is the
stalk switch bad?

most probable is a dirty switch contact - try cleaning
