How do I remove/reinstall rear view mirror?

in the years i have owned my 944 I have never had the rear view mirror
on its mount "properly" just hanging loose as I could never force it on,
even with Channellocks etc.

I recently bought another mirror off eBay because the original one was
losing its silvering around the edges.  It came with the little puck
that glues to the windshield.  I can't get it to slide *off* the puck.

What's the trick?

thanks

You need to reglue the new unit to windshield.  If you have the proper
adhesive, which is available from most auto parts stores,
position the mirror and use a broom stick to hold it in place over
night.  Not recommend trying to use immediately after adhesion is
initiated.

so you aren't supposed to be able to remove the mirror from the little
round metal piece?  The two are already separate on my car, how would I
remove it from the windshield without breaking the glass?

WRONG - you can remove the mirror, just pull it off - but you have to pull
hard - the mirror slides DOWN onto the round piece when the piece is glued
to the glass - i believe this is pictured in the manual

That's what I assumed... but how do I get the puck off of the mirror
that I bought?  it's no longer attached to anything.  Should I super
glue it to a piece of sheetmetal or something so I can whack it with a
punch?  Any other ideas?

I never could get the old mirror to actually slide down onto the puck,
but it looks like hell anyway so I will replace it as soon as I have
something to replace it with...

Use a single edge razor blade.  It will pop right off.

I'm just as confused as ever.

I'm used to american cars where the mirror mounts on a little puck
that is glued to the windshield, and the mirror can be removed from
the puck without removing the puck from the windshield.  usually held
on by a set screw, but the Porsche mirrors don't have that.  It does
appear that there is a separate puck, but I'm not sure how to deal
with it, hence my question.

Right now, my car has the mirror that was on it when I bought it, but
it is not firmly attached to the puck, and I have in the past tried to
slide it on the puck without success (trying to force it on with water
pump pliers didn't work.)  I have a replacement mirror which
*includes* another puck, and the two appear to be firmly and
permanently attached.

So...  do I a) remove the new mirror from its puck and slide it onto
the puck that's on my windshield, and if so, how? or b) remove the
puck that's on the windshield now and glue the new mirror onto the
windshield as an assembly?

Some mirrors have a set screw that keeps it firmly attached to the
puck/mount.
Some mirrors are attached or detached by twisting the mirror about 90
degrees.  Some even have screws in the mirror that must be tightened before
attaching to its mount.  ('91 Passat)

I am not up on what the Porsche mirrors look like.  <:-)
Can you put up a picture of the mirror's mounting area on the internet
somewhere?

I have removed and attached mirrors on 944 cars - it sits on a puck just
like you say, to install, press down firmly and it snaps in place, to
remove, tap upwards parallel to windshield (frequently the puck comes
loose) - to remove the puck, pry it "downward" and out of the mirror base.
