I can pick up a 1981 928 with 70K for $4000. In very good shape, recent
timing belt, etc.
My only concern is the year/age . I have a '87 924 , and there is no way I'd
do a '81 924.  I've heard
928's take a lot to keep them on the road - Is there any consensus about
this old a 928 ? Do I avoid it on
principle or go take a look ?

I'd want this as my daily driver, to replace the 924  -

I'm not a 928 expert, but I'm guessin gyou are dealing with a 5-digit
odometer, no way to verify the real mileage.

A well-maintained car is a well-maintained car.  A cheap Porsche is
never cheap.  I'm guessing that dropping your gas mileage in half
isn't a problem for you?

Half the mileage of my 924 !?!?  That bad ?  Perhaps I'll look at that old
VW instead ....
No, I'll take the 928 for a drive -

the 928 is a V-8 not a straight 4, and it is a much heavier car - perhaps
some day my previous post will show up

you will get less mileage, it is much more of a luxury car, with that luxury
car feel - if that's what you want, it's a great car, but it won't feel like
a 924/944

I drove it - and it's just a lovely car - body in fine shape, fishtailed
all over the road as the mechanic took it out
of the shop much too fast - for me  the gear shift pattern took some getting
used to ( reverse up and to the left !)  - but it needs a clutch and timing
belt - so all told it's $6400  - and it's OLD - even with just 70 K you can
feel the years in her -
Looks like I could never get the money out of it if I wanted to sell  - but
perhaps-
