at high speed, i noticed that wind noise (=inefficiency) is
significantly less when the wipers are 90 degrees, furthest from their
parked position.  this means the noise is from wind hitting the
broadside of the wiper, since the wiper projects from the car too far
beyond the rim of the hood.

are their any aftermarket wipers that sit closer to the car than the
originals?

any "outside the box" suggestions to drop the noise?

pardon me - wiper ARMS not wipers.

you are obcessing over nothing - most likely the wind noise is from
something other than the wipers and they are affecting airflow when
vertical - but you could prove that by removing the wipers.  However, the
drag from the wipers in their stowed location (which is pretty stagnant air)
is insignificant compared to, for example, the rear view mirrors.
