Hi, I'm confused about which performance chip to get for my 1991 944
S2.  Anyone have any suggestions for the best chip available to me?

All I have ever heard is that none of them are of much benefit to
non-turbos.

Porsche tweaks as much performance from their cars when they leave the
factory. You have to keep in mind that the car is a 1991 and developed 211HP
out of it's 3 liter power plant. Also keep in mind, the Corvette from that
era developed 245HP, meaning, in it's day that little 4 banger was quite a
machine. A V-8, 5.7 liter engine classified as "muscle" could only muster 34
more horses than the little German 4.
Now...that being said, a chip will get you virtually zip out of the S2. A
chip, plus a wider throttle body and an aftermarket exhaust will gain you
about 13HP to 23HP and this in the middle of the power curve. You will feel
the push up in the 50MPH to 60MPH range. If that is what you are after. If
you want to smoke ricers, you are out of luck. Generally the S2 will benefit
most with a supercharger or turbocharger. You will get 300RWHP with those
options, you may also kill the longevity of the engine life.
Truthfully, if you crave more power and your S2 is a coupe, it and the 951S
are identical, get one of those and chip it. If your S2 is a Cab (like mine)
you can just dream of the day you can get one from overseas with the Turbo S
motor stock...

Brad,
I have had the S2 for almost 3 years now. Your armrest is a genuine 1990
S2 Cabriolet model!

Ohhhhhh...You used to be just plain Devils944.  When I saw the S2
added recently I assumed you bought a new car.

Naaaahhh...I did a bunch of upgrades to my PC and decided on the name change
to reflect the 944 more accurately.
Here she is if you never saw her.

God, what a beautiful car.  I trust she's behaving nicely?  :-)  I
need to upload some pics of my cars to that site.

She has been relatively good...I got her from, not an abusive home, but from
a home that was not very savvy with what to do with a Porsche. It was stored
in a cold airplane hangar from October to April every year. It's only prep
was removing the battery. Here is a list of what was wrong when I got her...

The power steering rack seals had shrunk and were leaking a bit. I just had
it replaced a month ago...$1300.
By the way a friend at work with a C-4 1995 Corvette had his rack replaced
at the same time...$1600.00, so I guess this "Chevy is cheaper to maintain"
is bull.

He had an "Attention" light on when he started her in 1999, and instead of
getting diagnostics done, he chose to try the airbag reset sequence from
Clark's Garage online.
He managed to blow the airbag control computer. That little baby costs
$1600.00, but I found a guy parting an S2 Cab and he sold it to me for
$100.00.

Last, I snapped an inner valve spring on piston #1, It was a little weird,
because the car ran OK, it just sounded strange. Sad part of that ordeal was
the diagnostics cost more than the actual part ($28.00) and labor would have
cost if they recognized it right away. It was odd because usually the Outer
spring goes and it is most common on the turbos with all of that
compression.

Other than that...she has given me hours of fun...I just passed 80K and
judging from my last 944 (186K when sold) I have plenty more years with her.
