Hi All!
My '83 944 always starts up and runs fine with one exception. At times the
engine will sputter when it hits approximately 4k RPM or above. I have a 5
speed so it is usually easy enough to avoid the higher revs but would like to
find and fix the cause of this problem. The engine runs find if I just back it
down from this RPM range. The problem is sporadic but does seem to appear on a
fairly consistent basis.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to check first? Does this sound like
a fuel or electrical problem? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Search the web, it happens to more people. In my case it was a burned out
ground connection in the DME. Other people had a faulty DME relais. It also
can be a dirty fuel filter, bad fuel pump, bad pressure regulator etc. etc.
good luck , Paul

I've had that happen on my 83 944 and it turned out to be one the speed/ref
sensors located on the flywheel housing. The reason I was able to
conclusively isolate the problem to one of them is that, after first time
the engine started missing, one of them failed completely about a week
later. The engine won't run without both of them working. They are easy to
check by unplugging each one and measuring across the plug with an ohm
meter. They should read about 1k ohms. They cost about $100 each. There
are actually 3 prongs in the plug, try all combinations. All will read open
except the 1k ohm one.

Didn't even know I had sensors there! I'll have to check them out....
Thanks!

Sounds like fuel pressure problem. Get a pressure gauge and hook to
end of fuel rail. Should see at least 30 psi. Then pinch on the fuel
return line. Pressure should go up to 60 psi at least. If not then
new fuel pump and pressure regulator in order.
