Just bought a '83 944 with less than 90k miles, garage kept, new air
conditioner, major maintence completed at 88k miles (new front seals,
gaskets, etc.), 3 year old paint job, etc. I am wanting to change
over to a synthetic oil and have mixed feelings about flushing out the
engine. Any comments about flushing the engine and synthetic oils? I
have done these with my other autos every few oil changes with zero
problems, but I do practice preventive maintence on all my cars or
trucks (one truck I use a synthetic oil and it has over 240,000
miles), but this is a Porsche afterall!

I would not flush with anything but the correct weight oil. I switched to
synthetic in my 944 turbo about 9 years ago, just change the oil filter and
add new synthetic oil. Dealer recommends Mobile 1.

All synthetic oils are is the 'premium' of oils. You can mix them and the
engine will run fine. Some european cars use a blend of sythentic and other
oil. No 'flushing' is required. No nothing special is required, they won't
dissolve gaskets or seals, no tightening of bolts or anything. It's just a
better lubricant. Just be sure to use the proper weight for your car.

Ken- I use Castrol Synehetic on my 86 944 and have had no problems at all
since switching too it. As pointed out, no need to flush out the engine,
just drain the old oil and put in the new syntehtic. Good luck with your
944, sound like you found a gem!

I have an 86 944T and it runs on fully synthetic Mobil one (widely
considered to be the best)
I've just had the gearbox oil changed out to synthetic as well.
These changes were recommended by my service centre who's mechanics have
over 100 years of Porsche experience between them.

Tim, what synthetic gearbox oil are you using and have you seen any difference?
