Rattle on acceleration

When I accelerate (mainly in 1st or 2nd gear, it seems) I get this light-
sounding metallic rattle. It sounds a little like the noise I remember as a
kid when my dad's Ford Cortina had "rattling tappets".

It's difficult to tell where the sound is coming from, probably the front
of the car from what I can make out. The noise does not occur when revving
whilst stationery - at least, I haven't managed to get it to do so.

Any ideas, tips, etc... very welcome.

I have the exact same problem.  I know this doesn't help, but know you are
not alone.  I thought it was an exhaust hanger (had a similar sound on a
Jetta once) but that wasn't it on the Porsche.

Hmmm... I thought about exhaust mounting of some sort, too.

I had the same problem too... it turned out to the be that metal flange that
goes over the front part of the cat. I just pulled it off. The back side had
split and it was hanging form the cat.

it may also be the cat itself, when they fail the platinum "filter"
inside the cat breaks loose and rattles around...usually though exhaust
system hangers are the usual culprit...

The smoke looks like it's coming from the area where the exhaust down-
pipe joins to the exhaust pipe. I don't think it's an oil leak putting
oil on the hot pipe, because it's not got that bluey hue, and doesn't
smell right. I thought it might be a leak in the exhaust, but the smoke
is too cloudy (the car was hot) - and it's not noisy. It smells like
burning rubber or plastic, so I'm a little worried that something has
gone astray: However, the car still seems to run fine, so that seems like
an odd explanation.

Anyway, it's up on the mechanic's ramp tommorrow, so I'll keep you
posted.

A quick update - got the car to the mechanic this afternoon - it's an oil
leak. Good job I had a fire-extinguisher at the ready!!

Interesting thing was that the rattle has now gone - may be connected?
Who knows.

Well, it was a ruptured oil seal. Thankfully, the bill (including labour
and VAT) came to a modest ?120 - phew!
