I wouldn't do it - there's more that's special to the 944 convertable's
body and chassis than a few strengthening bars. Road holding and stability
are bound to be affected by a conversion ('cuse the pun).

Despite all the postings about fitting odd american engines, and other
alterations, the best 944 is a 944. Consider instead trading-in for a
convertable Porsche - at that age (21 today, 21 today, I've got the key....
etc) the price difference isn't probably much more excessive than  a
conversion.

In fact, a zany example does exist...

"84(B) Porsche 944 2.5 Litre engine,
2 door, Coupe, Guards Red, 69000 miles, CD Player, Sunroof, Alloy Wheels,
Alarm, Power Steering, Electric Windows, Rear Wash Wipe, Rear Spoiler, Body
Colour Bumpers, Elec/Heated Mirrors. ?4495"

"1990 PORSCHE 944 S2 2dr Cabriolet
Blue.944S2 cabriolet metallic blue blue power hood cream leather sports
seats will need some attension recent service FSH turbo 1 alloys mot and
taxed RHD coachwork couple of miner scuffs drives ok view more images of
this car at www.porschewanted.co.uk or tel sales any-time middx NW.London.
140000 miles. ?5650"

So, for an extra ?1200, you're getting a car 6 years younger, an S2 no
less, and a cabriolet. This is probably an extreme case to put it mildly...
Probably down to the mileage more than anything else, but it does
illustrate my point.

I believe there are a couple of outfits in Los Angeles that will modify
almost anything into a convertible, HOWEVER, that running price for a
low-end job was somewhere in the vicinity of US $ 20,000 and went up
from there... the basic 944/951/968 body is not strong enough to have
half of the sheet metal go missing and requires a bunch of extra metal
bracing to compensate

(for that amount of money you can buy a couple of early 90's 944 Cabs
and have change for maintainince for a couple of years)
