What's the point of the little plastic sheild/lip that sticks up when you
remove the sunroof from the 944? Is that there just for the purpose of
attaching the sunroof, or am I supposed to angle it up to help deflect wind,
or whatever other purpose it may serve? I've just been wondering even since
I bought the car this summer.

You bought the car this summer (SUMMER?) and haven't had the sunroof out?
You take it out and get to speed with the windows up and you will appreciate
the deflection. Try it --- you'll like it!

I had it off almost everyday, but no I didn't notice any deflection...I
would leave it usually flat or at a slight ten degree angel above the
roofline. Didn't notice much. I don't do much highway travel either,
though. Since we're on the topic of sunroofs, I may as well ask! My
switch does not work as I need to use the emergency crank in the trunk. The
previous owner said a relay? What kind of work would it entail to fix this
switch, and would it be worth the effort?

relays are easy, but the most common issue with sunroofs is the sunroof
position microswitches going out of adjustment with the one in the roof
being the main culprit... the switch rarely fails,
and the deflector makes a diff when on the freeway. I adjust mine to
minimze noise and interior wind buffet, typiclly about a 45 degree up
angle from flat.

Deflector makes a HUGE difference in my '89 944. without deflector ,
there's a weird air pulsation in the car that feels like your eardrums
are gonna blowout. The highest failure item in sunroof release system is
the little gearbox in the trunk. Available used for $35 to $50 ?

That air deflector, slim little plastic lip that it is, makes a hell of a
difference at highway speeds.
With it down, driving above ~80 kmh and you'll feel like you're inside a
watermelon with someone kicking it around. The air kind of whump, whump,
whumps into the car and you can feel pressure waves bouncing through your
skull.
Flip up that little lip and everything smooooothes right out.
I think with such a low, aerodynamic profile, the air slides very cleanly
over the roof of the car. Open the top, and that clean air stream creates a
strong vacuum that pulses as ai is sucked out through the top in random
ways. Raising the lip creates a turbulent region over the roof, and
breaks-up the laminar flow causing the vacuum. Instant relief.
Hope that helps,
John
