Hi all,

All of a sudden the heater of my '87 944S has stopped putting out hot air.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be the cause?  Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan Solis

Hopefully, its just your thermostat (stuck open).  Does the temp gauge act
normally or is it low?

Obvious question but have you checked the water level in the car?

Hi m,

Obvious questions are perfectly fine since I'm such an automotive novice.
The coolant level seems to be fine though.  Any other thoughts!

Thanks,
Dan

Hi John,

The temperature guage on the console seems to be working fine.  Could it
still be the thermostat?

Thanks,
Dan

-- If the water has been low you will have to bleed the system to get the air
out before any thing will happen

Mine did this about three months ago, turned out to be a blown fuse.  The
fan would work, but zero heat no matter which way I turned the knob.

Hope this helps.

Hi JH,

I checked this out and found a fuse that was blown -- which I then replaced.
It didn't fix the heater problem, but at least something else on the car is
now working!

Thanks,
Dan

Have you tried pressing the front windscreen demister button with the
slider on the centre airvents moved to the down position? That normally
belts out hot air pretty quickly. If it doesn't, then it may be something
fairly fundamental, like a coolant problem. If it does, and hot air
doesn't appear otherwise, maybe the problem is a more subtle problem with
the vent and heater controls.

Sorry I can't contribute anything more constructive than that.

Hi Dave,

I checked this out, and unfortunately no hot air appeared, so maybe it IS a
problem with the vent and heater controls.

Thanks,
Dan

sounds like the heater control valve (vacuum operated) at  top rear of
the engine near the firewall has died.....  this valve controls the
water flow through the core,  it is a vacuum operated valve that is
normally closed.    it connects to a short hose that enters the head at
the #4 plug area, between the head and the intake manifold..
