Hi all
When parking I have to lock the steering wheel to the right (86 944T RHD)
ands it ocassionally make a sort of whining/whistling/vibrating sort of
noise/feel (do you like my technicalese?)
Any ideas on what this might be (and how bad it is to fix) would be greatly
appreciated

Regards

Barry

Check your power steering fluid.

Hello  Mr Russell
You helped me out greatly on a previous query (indicators) so thanks again
May I ask why the power steering fluid would be a factor on full lock right
but not on full lock left?
Having said that, I have looked at tthis and as far as I can tell it seems
to be ok - it was a a little while ago though

Best Regards

may I suggest that  you avoid putting the wheel at full lock - if it hits
the lock, back up a fraction of a turn - you may save your power steering
rack from premature failure.  When you hit the lock, the pressure in the
rack can rise (depending on if the rack "bottoms out" or if the worm gear
hits the stop"

You may have a leak--steering rack and the connections - check it again---
also make sure you are using the right fluid---the 944 uses automatic
transmission fluid not power steering fluid Dextron II I think it says but
not finding that I am using Dextron III---I may regret it in the not too far
distant future.  If you have a whining noise you want to get it corrected---
ya know another thing could be the power steering pump---two other things I
would suggest--- One join the Rennlist e-mail group for the car--- lots of
good knowledgeable people in there-- another is to find Pelican Parts or
Clarks Garage or both and look through Clarks for a solution to your
particular symptoms.  Good luck

You're welcome, Barry. If you'll check your linkage, you'll see that the
rack doesn't connect to your steering column at the center of the car.
I'd suspect that this fact would account for the different pressure and
distance traveled for obtaining right lock and left lock positions. In
any case, a whining or growling power steering pump is indicative of a
failing pump (unlikely), or the presence of air in the system causing
the noise. If you'll take the top off of the PS reservoir and check the
fluid after turning to full lock, it should contain bubbles/foaming if
there is air in the system. Proper fluid level and bleeding should
remedy the situation if that is the case. Check for leaks also while
you're there. Squeeze the boots on either end of the steering rack to
see if they're is any fluid in them. Good luck.
