Intermittent starting

I have an 83 944.  I have replaced the cap and rotor and the coil tests
fine.  The DME and fuel relay were replaced, yet this car still does not
start consistently.  When it runs it runs fine.  When it does not start
the engine just turns over and over seemingly not getting a spark.  I am
not a mechanic but with some good guidance would like to conquer this
thing myself.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

if your plug wires are old, and it's humid, that can cause it.  Are you
getting any spark out of the coil? (I presume you can figure out how to test
that)  if no spark from coil, check connections to TDC and timing sensor on
bell housing

First - thanks for the help.  I took the car to a mechanic and he tested
the coil and said it was good.  Do you test it by pullin off the end
attaching to the cap and attach it to a spark plug and then check for
spark?  It has been humid around here and the wires could be old, I just
purchased the car in March.  Is there a way of testing them without having
to spend the big bucks to get new ones?  I am lost on the TDC and timing
on the bell sensor... any insight would be appreciated.

First--- buy the go to Clarkes Garage then think about a Haynes manual--I
had something similar and it was the fuel pressure regulator---there is a
trouble shooting section that is worth every second of reading---  The
markings for TDC are actually on the flywheel--ya gotta crawl under the
car--- don't ask me why but that's where I found mine---only after reading
the Haynes---  Good luck

the marks are on the flywheel as you say, but on all the cars I've looked at
there is a window on the top rear of the engine for looking at the marks.
It may be located in a different place on the really early cars or on a
turbo, I havent checked the manual.

And, instead of haynes, which is frequently incomplete, why not just
download the complete shop manual from the web - the link was posted a while
back.

Do you recall what the website was where I could download the entire
manual?  Also how do I find the reference sensor?  Would that cause this
level of intermittent starting?

Thanks

suggestion - learn how to search the NG archives.
the manual is here http://www.cannell.co.uk/944%20Reference.htm
it will tell you where the sensors are.
bad plug wires will cause the problem you report.

have you checked the fuel pressure ????

try this

turn key on, wait 10 seconds, turn key off,
do it again,
turn key on , start car.

possible fuel pump check valve not keeping rail pressurized or weak fuel
pump...

DC

the ref sensors are on the top of the bell housing rear of engine, two
of them connected to a pair of connectors just above the heater control
valve next to the drivers side rear of the cam cover ,  generally not
imtermittent, usually a hard fail.

Well the verdict is in... for now.  I took it to a mechanic and essentially
he had no clue.  It suffices to say that in the future I will reference
this site for all issues - at least the ones that pertain to the 944.  I
towed the car and found the sensors.  Pulled them out and they were
slightly greasy, took a clean rag to them, put them back in and well for
today the car is again off and running.  To those who were willing to
assist and lend your expertise - many thanks.  I have no idea why the
mechanic did not do a checklist that you all refered to, but it is nice to
know good people are out there.  I wager you saved me from losing more
money and even selling the car.... until at least tomorrow!!  Great site
here!

A little more information:

After I switched the cap and rotor it started right up - the next day
nothing.

I then switched the DME started right up - the next day nothing.

Swtiched the fuel pump relay and well the same as above.  What gives?
Could it be a tempermental sensor?  Where are the flywheel sensors and the
oxygen sensors?
