My 1986 944 transmission went out a little over a week ago. I had no other
options (I was about 6 miles from home) so I called AAA and had it taken to
the local Porxhed dealer (Bob Rosen) in the Philadelphia surburbs.
They told me that the clutch went out (approx 97K miles on the car) and the
transmission was stuck in two gears. Anyway, I told them to go ahead and the
replaced the clutch but not the transmission. They initally told me that the
car would run in 1st, 2nd and 5th gears only. When I got there to pick up
the car, they told me that they tested it again and it won't shift in any
gear.
They recommended I consider selling it to some of the locals that like to
race 944's or they would check the availability of a used/salvaged 944
transmission.
So here are my questions?
1. Anyone know where I can inquire on the availability of a transmission?
2. Anyone know of a reliable experienced Porche mechanic/garage in the
Philadelphia area? I live near Valley Forge.
3. Any suggestions?
thanks, Harry

Check out ebay, there are several transmissions for sale.
Just make sure you check feedback and shipping & handling cost before you
bid.
I think there's even a 968 6-speed, man I would love to try that!
Also check out pelicanparts.com, 944 classified section- several people
parting out 944's there also.
good luck,

a couple of years ago, AASE brothers had new in box transmissions for
$2,000 - AASE is gone, but the transmissions must have gone somewhere.
Also, a gentleman on this group is parting a 924S and may well still have a
transmission.
I don't know how the transmission could fail in the way you describe - my
trans failed by having a tooth break off the pinion gear (leading to a real
mess inside) - you might benefit by asking some more questions about exactly
what is wrong with the trans.

Go to http://www.rennlist.com to the forums, or e-mail lists for 944. There
are many very knowledgeable people to help you there.

Clutch problems are common due to OEM design. I suggest you ask your
mechanic to replace it with a better type. I have used a replacement set
from Centerforce with good results. Check out car-part.com for a used
transaxle or call around to your area trans shops for a rebuild and/or
upgrade. The transaxle should be a front wheel drive Audi unit.
