'83 944 Sputter Problem

My '83 944 starts, idles, and seems to run fine with the exception of one
problem.  Whenever I get her up past around 4k rpm she sputters.  If I ease her
back down under this threshold she runs fine again.  Since I have a 5 speed it
is pretty easy to avoid this higher rpm range during the course of my daily
driving.  Nonetheless, I would still like to figure out what the problem is.  I
tried changing my plugs and running some injector cleaner thru my system but
that didn't seem to help.  Any suggestions?  Cheers!

sounds like the throttle position switch is bad....

I had ta similar problem with my '86 NA. It was a total failure at WOT. Lift a
tad, and she's fine.

Turned out to be a bad solder joint on a diode in the DME dealing with the Wide
Open Throttle fuel enrichment circuit.

As the later DMEs are 3.1 and your is, I believe, a 1.2, I can't pinpoint the
diode for you. Gee, I'm learning WAAYYY more about DMEs than I ever wanted to
know!

Thanks for the advice!

I'll have to keep my eyes open for a good used replacement DME.....

Is there a way to test the throttle switch???

Cheers!

instructions for testing throttle switch and a diagnostic flow chart are in
the service manual, just download a copy

Silly question: the car's been serviced, hasn't it?

Sounds like it could be blocked fuel injectors, or the myriad of other
problems, like cracked (or dirty) HT leads, knackered fuel pump and so
on.

Please don't subject your 944 to any sort of cleaner like the one you
describe. To start with, the engine was designed to run on petrol;
second, the cleaner won't really do the job. To properly clean injectors,
they need to be removed, sent off, ultrasonically cleaned, returned and
refitted: This is, however, expensive: replacement injectors are a lot
cheaper if you shop around some of the alternative suppliers and factors
out there.

Yup, the car has been regularly maintained so I'm hoping there are no major
surprises here.

Where's the site where I can download a copy of the service manual?

Thanks again!

How long since you changed the fuel filter?  A partially clogged one will
cause symptoms like you describe.

When did you change your fuel filter last? Fuel starvation at high rpm
is typical of a clogged fuel filter.
