How do I set my Timing?

The bolt that holds my rotor bracket came loose and i got some pretty bad
noise from the distibutor area before i towed the car home.  Once home I
tightened the bolt for the bracket, reinstalled the rotor, cap etc. Car
starts now and the noise is gone but it has a bad miss, rough idle,
powerloss etc.  I tried to remove the rotor bracket bolt again to see if I
could adjust the timing here and realised I over torqued it and now its
stripped..I was still able to try adjusting timing by moving the rotor
itself..no luck here, I could make it run worse but not better.

Timing is set mechanically by aligning the the cam sprocket with the TDC
mark on the housing. IF the belt was not disturbed then you did not alter
the timing. More likely you have a damaged rotor or distibuter cap. Replace
them and I bet it runs correctly.

Looking at the distributor from the front head-on, you will see FIVE wire
contacts- disregard the center one. The timing firing order is 1-4-3-2.

The rotor head should point to the #1 cylinder, roughly at the 5 O'clock
position, or at the bottom RT corner of the contact layout. See below:

Imagine each number above is a distributor contact on the engine. If the
rotor head does not point to the #1 contact- rotate the engine by
"bumping" it(quick, short bursts of the ignition key starting motor).
However, this may require two people- one to turn key, and the other
viewing the rotor position.
