I have a 86 944 and I found pieces in the dif fluid. My mechanic told
me that this is a common problem, so I guess that I am in the market
for a new (or used) tranny. Does anybody know where I can get one. I
can pick one up here for $1700 Canadian but I was wondering if anybody
knows of a better deal. My guy says that this would be an easier way
to go instead of replacing the parts. I guess that the labor to fix it
would be outrageous.

Thanks for your help.

$1700 Cdn sounds like a reasonable price IF!!! you trust the rebuilder.  It
seems to be fairly common to break teeth off the pinion gear, and this does
no good at all to the trasmission.  I personally believe it is caused by the
softening of the rubber do-nut in the center of the clutch, but I don't have
detailed analysis to prove that belief.  Changing the trans is easy, takes 3
hours or so.  I'd seriously consider using this as an opportunity to also
change the clutch - use one that has springs, not that stupid rubber center.
If you can get a factory rebuilt, that's what I'd recommend.  I paid $1900
for a rebuilt, and a few years later $2,000 (US) for a new, in box
transmission when the rebuilt failed (due to incompetent rebuild, it was a
different failure, the side plate split because the retaining bolts weren't
properly tightened

anyway, your mechanic is giving you good advice on this.
