ok gents---besides sears-- who makes a battery for the 944?   It needs 675
cold cranking amps with an exterior size of 7" high 7 inches deep and 10 "
long.  Any help greatly appreciated!

Sears does not make any batteries, they buy them from Exide, or Gnb
anyone will have the correct battery, it is either a group 47 or 48, I
forget which.
Call Napa, call Checker call pretty much anyone, they are not that hard to
get.

Brian:

I replaced the battery in my 1987 944 Turbo with a Wal-Mart: Ever Start part
number 41-4 (I've confirmed this P/N by looking at the battery in my car)
about a year ago.  I works great and cost about $40.  I compared it to the
Interstate battery which was in the car when I bought it and it appeared
that the case was exactly the same as the Interstate.  When I asked the guy
at Wal-Mart about the manufacturer of the battery, he told me it was
Interstate.  When I looked around for the Interstate battery, I found it
costs about $110.  I think I remember that the battery size is 51R but I'm
not sure of that.

I have a Cabriolet and the lower cost batteries did not work as well. I
would go through batteries at about a 18 month clip. The top is completely
run from the battery as are the fan motors, alarm and memory systems. I have
been running the Sears Diehard Import for about 2 years now and have had no
problems.

I am sure with N/A's and 951's any battery would do.

I can second the group 41 battery, although mine came from NAPA a couple of years ago.

Thanks all--- I had gone to Kragen's (Checkers) and their replacement
battery was too long for the location of the battery by at least an inch and
maybe two.  The rest of their batteries that had the cca were either too
long or too high.  I'll try Walmart--- there's one about 3 miles from here
or if nothing else good ol Sears.  (the two largest retailers--- funny that
they would be the ones to have the parts but maybe that's how they became
the biggest).  Thanks again

I used a kragen battery on one 944, don't have the car handy to check - it
was a standard size though.  maybe you need to find a different store.

Bill--- that's completely possible--- and there are two in town--- but the
battery that they specified in the 'puter was just plain too big.  Don't
know why but......

OK, I work at a Schucks store, and we list a group 41,
which is what you said the wal-mart guy listed, as well.

I thought it was a group 47 or 48 before, but I looked
and it is a group 41. A group 47 is smaller than a 41,
so if you have a clearance problem, that may be the ticket,

Group sizes are only the first two digits in a battery's
part number, so if one store says "41-1" and the
other says "41-75" they are the same *size* battery.

CCA ratings and such do vary by manufacturer, however.

Small variances, such as tabs on the side for handles
may make one brand tighter than the other, also.

You should not have to pay more than sixty dollars
for a group 41, or seventy for a group 47 battery.

Bernard---- Thank you and I will check it out--- fortunately I am in that
position that I know it's going but it ain't gone yet!  Still works --- most
of the time.  Today was "honey do's" tomorrow is car day.  Will use the info
carefully and let you know what I come up with.
