I'm just looking for some general information from experienced owners.  I am
vaguely considering purchasing a 944 for both its practical and Porschephile
reasons.

The car would be driven about 4-500 miles per week for work.  It would have
10-12 stops daily.  Since this is in Phoenix, the A/C would be used heavily
(on high) for a good part of the year.

Am I just looking at trouble or is it practical and affordable to consider
this car for this role?

I have 2 944 daily drivers. Both with > 225,000 miles. My 16 year old drives
one. (Lucky dog)

Both are very reliable and I get 27 mpg running 80 or so on the Interstate, 50
mile commute each way.

A/C is VERY good as these are FL cars.

I maintain them religiously, run synthetic fluids throughout. Have learned to
change my own belts so its reasonably inexpensive.

I'd go for a post-85.5 model. Expect to get what you pay for. The steering rack
will, in all probability, need replacement. I've done both of mine.

The most bizarre thing is that they are cheap to insure. Go figure.

I run my 86 944 everyday with no trouble at all.  Pay more for the car that
has a full service history and has recent service done like timing belt,
water pump, motor mounts, etc etc.  A $3000 dollar 944 can quickly turn into
a $7000 dollar 944 if your stuck with numerous big repairs/updates.  If you
google this group you'll be able to find tons of information about these
cars.   But, nn older Porsche thats been cared for will be more reliable
than most of the newer cars out there, in my experience anyway.

You can look at it another way...

If you pay $5000.00 for a 944 and dump another $7000.00 into it to get it
perfect, you would still save $8000 on the price of a new Honda Accord.

Today's car prices are so out of whack, and an economy car now costs close
to $20,000 a restored, high quality car like an older Porsche is a bargain.

Probably last longer than the Accord too despite being almost 20 years old.

Plus, your 944 is guaranteed to provide grins as it handles so well.
Something you don't get from an econo-box.

Good luck, get a pre-purchase inspection!!

It's not a Toyota by any stretch of the imagination, but it shouldn't
be a major problem if you get a good one.  (records, pre-purchase inspection etc.)
Get an "85.5" or later.  There are two interiors.  The later one has a much better
HVAC system.
