My 1990 944S2 has been perfect for my two years of ownership. It has 140k
miles and runs strong every day. I started it last week and it
immediately stalled. Started fine again, coughed, then stalled. If i'm
heavy on the gas, I can keep it running for a while. Then it will drive
and accelerate, but continues to hestitate, cough, sputter. It is barely
driveable. Please help! I have no idea what to do!
step one - check the timing and make sure you haven't slipped a tooth.
Presuming that's ok, you can pretty much rule out the DME, I think, and the
associated sensors - I'd personally check fuel pressure next and look for a
fuel related problem. just a guess, mind you

Is there an easy way to check the fuel pressure? What should it be?
I tried unplugging one fuel injector, as mentioned in the other post, but
3 cylinders doesn't make the car run very well.
How would I check the DME relay?
Many THanks!

Locate the relay in the fuse box, remove it, connect pin 30 (careful always
on directly connected to the battery) to pins 87 and 87b, you should hear
the fuel pump run. Start the car, if it runs OK then the relay is faulty.
Remember to disconnect when engine is switched off.
If you haven't got replacement relay, you can connect pins 87 and 87b to one
of the fuses which is turned on with ignition, e.g. the auto transmission
one
(even if you haven't an auto).

I recently had a stall at start up issue.. if I kept the gas to it
till run it would run, but the idle would drop every time I was
driving and dis-engaged the clutch.. may be a different problem, but
my culprit was the #4 gasket on the intake manifold. starts right p
and runs like a champ now.

Start by looking for a broken or disconnected vacuum hose. Check the
DME relay. Try unplugging one fuel injector. If it smoothes out, you
need a new FPR.Good luck.

Most common problem is the DME relay. Easy to just replace the DME relay
for $25.00.
check the wires on the mass air flow sensor for poor contacts.use a
meter to check for variable resistance on back of sensor,it should rise
and fall when door opens and closes.also check your fuel pressure.
