Idle speed increase without throtle input

Thank you all for the help relative to the battery--- I finally went to the
net for AC Delco and found that there were two batteries listed for them---
one was too big the other was less than the cca that I had been told to get
but more than what I had (40r6yr was the part number).  It works.  Now that
the engine spins properly it starts pretty well.  But..........

Today I got some gas and when I got home the car seems to idle about 300
revs faster than before.  I suspect the timing has slipped but am unsure.  I
am sure that the car is due for a retensioning but then again I have an 87
that has a spring tensioner for the camshaft belt so maybe it doesn't.  I
can't think of another reason for the idle speed to do that although I'm
sure it could be a number of things.

Any ideas?

pedal, linkage, plugs etc etc

I had a similar problem with my '87 944 Turbo.  The throttle has a sensor
(TPS = throttle position sensor) which contains a switch and potentiometer
which tells the computer when the throttle is completely closed and when its
open, how much it is open.  The computer makes the engine idle at the proper
RPM when it sees the switch closed.  Pins 4 and 6 go to the switch, and 1,
2, and 3 go to the pot.  With the engine turned off and the cable
disconnected from the TPS you should be able to measure about zero ohms with
the throttle closed and an open circuit with the throttle open even a
little.  You should also hear a click when the switch opens and closes.  I
would start here because I understand this happens a lot.

The belt tension is only set by the spring tensioner after the proper
procedure, then the tensioner is bolted down.  The belt tension service
interval is something like 2,000 miles after replacing the belt, and 15,000
mi, then replace again after 30,000 mi.
