I just bought this 86 944 turbo, replaced the water pump/belts/tentioners
and it ran great. I thern parked it for a few months, had to jump start
it (batt was old) drove it round for a bit, then parked it, and replaced
the battery. Now the engine cranks, but wont start. Funny thing is, the
horn went off whyle I was cranking the engine, and wouldnt shut off till i
removed the battery cable, put it back on and the horn is off. Might be a
problem with the factory alarm (which I dont know how to use) and there is
a key hole near the drivers door handle I dont know what its for.
Can some one tell me what that key is for, and why the horn goes off,
and engine wont run.
thank you

Keyhole behind driver's door is for the alarm. Off position is slot vertical.
If the alarm switch is turned off, and the horn blows alarm style
(on/off/on/off ...), then you may have a failed alarm box. BTW, the alarm has a
separate horn located just behind the battery. You can dampen it with your
finger.
Go into the passenger footwell, peel back the carpet, and feel around for a
metallic box about the size of a pack of cigarettes clipped to the back of the
DME. Going into this box will be two connectors, one a 2 pin the other a 6 pin
(I think). Unplug both of these. They'll likely be tight but there is no
fastener.
Your car should now start. If you can figure out how to repair the alarm, I'd
love to know!

Ok, thank you for your reply. Now it as least tryng to start. Starter
is dragging pretty bad, so I'm replacing it today.

I too am having alarm issues on my 88 951. The car starts just fine,
but putting it into reverse causes the alarm horn to chirp. Pressing
the hazard button does the same thing. Lights on and right turn
signal on causes the alarm to go off (on/off/on/off as normal).
I tried unplugging the 2 pin and 8 pin connectors on the alarm box,
and it doesn?t chirp anymore, but it also doesn?t start like it?s
starving for fuel. I suspect the alarm module allows fuel flow.
Instead of replacing the starter, I?d try starting out borrowing a
working alarm module and seeing if that works. I?m about to do the
same.
As a side note, removing the alarm fuse (#12) has no effect on my
problem as I assume it won?t with your problem either. Removing the
alarm fuse and the alarm module causes the same problem (no fuel).
If anyone has any input about either of our problems, please leave
some feedback.

I found a temporary solution to my alarm problem that you may want to
try.
I still have the alarm fuse out, but I don?t know if it makes any
difference at all. Instead of pulling both the 8 pin and 2 pin
connectors, I kept the 8 pin in and instead pulled the power/ground 2
pin connector out. No more alarm.
Hopefully that will solve your problem. My next step is to find
someone that lives in connecticut with a 951 that would let me try
their alarm control unit to verify that my acu is in fact broken.

don't know your car that well, but the symptoms sound a lot like a grounding
problem, suggest you look at that potential.

the keyhole by the door is the factory alarm, the key is to turn it on
and off, if the keyslot is vertical the alarm is off. if the horn goes
off and the car won't start the alram has done its thing and disabled
the car.... turn off the alram and try again
