I recently had the water pump replaced in my '84 944. The new pump was what
the mechanic called an "updated" pump. It went about 6,000 mi. then failed.
I got a warranty replacement and it seems to be working OK (no leaks), but
when I drive the car at highway speeds the temperature gauge shows the car
running hotter than it was before the replacement. Before the replacement
the needle usually hovered around the mid hash mark on the gauge, now it
hovers near the three-quarters hash mark (and the radiator fans do not kick
on). Oddly, when I slow down to about 30-40 mph the needle drops down to
the mid hash mark area, and when I drive in city traffic the needle stays
near the mid hash mark and the fans kick on when the temperature goes
slightly above. I asked the mechanic about this and was told it was normal.
Any thoughts on whether this is normal, or whether it is something I should
check out further, would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I have been told by the Porsche dealer parts people that the "updated"
water pump does not move as much fluid as the older models. I was
having same problem with my 84 944 and solved it by taking the fan
housing out and back blowing the crud out of the radiator and ac
condensor with compressed air. After twenty years you can accumulate
a lot of crud between the vanes. Now temp needle hovers at mid scale
all times.

on mine the needle would stay about a needle width above the 2nd mark
just below horizontel, in town it would rise slghtly above horizontal
and the fan would kick on and it would drop to normal then start to rise
up and so forth until I could get to a cruise of above 40 mph for a few
minutes then it would stabilize.
there is really no such thing as normal in a 944, any where between the
2nd mark and the 3rd mark in the white is normal and as long as the fans
kick on and the temp drops then iot is ok...you don't mention if you
have ever rplaced the radiator but if oyu have over 100k then it might
make a big differance..
did on me when I did mine..

IMO, this event can often mean that the thermostat and gasket are not
properly seated on the water pump. The gasket is hard to install and can
end creating a small air pocket which acts as an insulator on the
thermostat...making it slower to respond to increases in temperature in the
water jacket.
