CV Joint Wear?

I pulled the rear axles out and took apart all 4 CV Joints.  I was getting a
knocking, thumping or rapping noise coming from the right rear of the car.
It was not quite a clicking noise.  I put the car on stands and had my wife
run the car in gear to get everything spinning with me laying underneath it.
Apparently with the weight off the tires, I cannot hear the nose or
duplicate it.  I figure it almost has to be the joints.  Could the gearbox
be making this noise?  I do see some wear spots in the cage and the center
hub where the balls roll around.  I expected to see something broke or much
more wear.  These joints are pretty rugged.  I do see some wear, so I
probably will replace them.  Does anyone have any thoughts on how much wear
will start causing noise??  I hate to spend the money and still have this
problem.  I guess it could be a wheel bearing, but I hear it going straight
and it is not any worse going around a turn.  I also hear it in all the
gears, which makes me think it is not coming from the transmission.  Is
there a joint between the torque shaft and gearbox?  I do not see it in any
of my drawings,

I had the same problem on my 84 944.  If your car has over 100,000
miles you probably need to change the rear wheel bearings.

Thanks George!
That is what I was going to take a look at next.

Swap your axles.  Left to right, right to left.  30 minutes job.  Problem
fixed.  You'll get another 100K out of your bearings.

believe it or not, i had the same problem, and it turned out to be the
parking brake. i adjusted it and sanded down the inside of the rotor, and
the noise was gone. but, maybe that was just my car
